STOVALL AT A GLANCE

Stovall, NC was incorporated in 1907. Originally named Sassafras Fork for the large tree that stood at the intersection of Highway 15 and Main street. Convenient to Kerr Lake, Stovall like surrounding areas is largely agricultural, yet offers amenities reserved only for some larger towns.  Enjoy an afternoon at the park or host your event at the former Sassafras restaurant.  Attend a course at the Stovall branch of the Granville county library system or visit the home site of John Penn.  Stovall Welcomes You.

"Patriot, Continental Congress member, and North Carolina signer of the Declaration of Independence, John Penn was a native of Caroline County, Virginia.  Although he achieved only a limited, formal education, Penn read many books from the library of Edmund Pendleton, a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses’ and Penn’s uncle.  Under the tutelage of Pendleton, Penn served as a legal apprentice and in 1762 obtained a license to practice law.  The Patriot first practiced law in Virginia before traveling to Granville County, North Carolina and establishing a law practice."

He passed away at his home in 1788, just 3 miles outside of Stovall.
